You gotta eat and take in water and
electrolytes during your ride. It sounds like you were bonking, which can actually be dangerous.
Carry a couple of peanut butter sandwiches cut up into squares, or go for something like a PowerBar. Start eating about 40 minutes into your ride and eat something every 20 minutes or so; try and eat 200-400 calories per depending on your size and ride intensity. Get a bento box if you aren't coordinated enough to grab stuff out of your jersey pockets as you ride.
Start drinking, preferably some sort of sports drink with electrolytes, right away. Try to drink a bottle an hour.
And, lastly, don't rule out your physical condition. You just might have been going at a harder rate than you realized given you were riding a mountain bike. If so, you'd be burning through your blood and liver sugar like crazy.
